President Obama to make second Back to School address

August 31st, 2010 by admin

Hopefully you filed your procedures and parent communications from President Obama’s national address to students last year, because we’ve received confirmation that the president is planning to make another address on TUESDAY, SEPT. 14, 2010. Click here to read the full statement released by the Press Secretary.

We want to open up the comments below to ask you all how you’re planning to handle this in your districts. Are you doing anything different the second time around? How/what are you communicating to your campuses? And how/what are you communicating to your parents? Will participation be decided at the superintendent level or campus level? What’s your plan for media relations? Anyone incorporating digital or social media?

1HomeDiscYou can also talk directly with other members in your area to see what they’re doing on our Discussion Forums. Check in the top, right corner of the page to make sure you’re logged in, then go to the blue Membership tab at the top, mouse over Member Area and click on Discussion Forums. Click on your region under Regional Discussion.
*Remember to click the red SUBSCRIBE button to receive email notices when new comments are made to that discussion.

If you’re looking for guidance on what to include in your correspondence, be sure to check the Presidential Address category in the Document Vault. To get there, again, make sure you’re logged into our website, then go to the blue Membership tab at the top, mouse over Member Area, click on Document Vault, then click on the Presidential Address folder to view examples of what other districts are doing. Please also upload any of your district’s media or constituent correspondence regarding the President’s speech to this folder. And remember–the Document Vault is a means for inspiration, not duplication.

For those who are looking for a refresher on last year’s address and the drama that surrounded it, here is an article from USA Today and from eSchoolNews that details how districts throughout the country responded.

Good luck everyone and please feel free to contact the TSPRA state office with any questions (512.474.9107).

  1. I’d like to hear what everyone is doing. As of today, Georgetown ISD is still brainstorming. Does anyone have the time of the speech?

  2. We’ve decided to have parents opt-in if they want their students to watch the address live. Leander ISD sent home permission slips with all students today (English and Spanish), created an information page on our Web site with a link to the transcript of the 2009 address, and sent an all e-mail to parents directing them to the LISD Web site if they need an additional permission slip to opt-in. http://www.leanderisd.org
