Professional Achievement Award
2006 Winner: Tim Carroll, APR, Allen ISD
Allen ISD Public Information Director Tim Carroll has worked in school PR for 24 years and has been a TSPRA member for 11 years. Tim is a proven communications professional, handling his duties with a unique dedication, creativity, and personal touch. He has received TSPRA Star Awards nearly every year, including four Best of Category Awards. Tim has also been awarded three national awards from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). He is an active member of his school district and has attended every graduation ceremony since moving to the AISD community. While his PR duties keep him busy and in touch with city officials and local business partners, Tim has still found time to serve as an elementary school PTA president, mentor students and teach a university PR writing course.

Most Valuable Member Award
2006 Winner: Scott Milder, SHW & Friends of Texas Public Schools
Scott Milder has significantly contributed to the improvement of TSPRA by helping school PR professionals hone their skills. Scott, who works for SHW Group as Vice President of Communications, offers assistance to school districts with bond referendums and crisis situations. As President and Chief Executive of the Friends of Texas Public Schools, he has taken on the task of refocusing Texans on the reality that the state’s public schools are doing a great job and shares the good news that public school educators are truly dedicated to helping children achieve success. He seeks support from businesses and organizations with his grassroots campaign to set the record straight about Texas public schools.

Rookie Of The Year
2006 Winner: Bria Michael, Coppell ISD
Coppell ISD Communications Assistant Bria Michael joined the district after graduating with a communications degree and found herself handling some difficult issues with the media including the deaths of two students, the introduction of a new student management system, newly aligned curriculum, the possible closure of two campuses, and a land purchase that would bring an additional 2,000 students to the district. She helped coordinate the first ever curriculum Town Hall meeting, communicated the change from a trimester to a semester system, conducted focus group meetings, and assisted with the education foundation campaign. Bria is a true professional who exemplifies the future leadership of school public relations.

Bright Idea Award
2006 Winner: Karen Permetti, Clear Creek ISD
Karen Permetti, Director of Public Information for Clear Creek ISD, created a unique incentive program for underwriters for her district’s Education Foundation gala. Despite economic growth within the district, sponsorship for the Foundation gala had begun to stagnate. In order to generate interest in the Foundation and develop improved relationships with community businesses, Karen created a marketing package for sponsors outlining the benefits of sponsorship. The end result is that the Gala more than doubled its profits and for the first time raised 70-thousand dollars. That money financed teacher incentive grants and A-P strategy incentives.

Media Award
2006 Winner: Terry Stutz
Veteran newspaperman John Black publishes The Bayshore Sun, a twice-weekly paper that covers a three-city community. He skillfully reports on difficult stories, such as the firing and resignation of a superintendent, the search for a new superintendent, board issues, a bond referendum, and school finance. John is a supporter of public schools and the children who attend them and shows this by printing student photos and stories in every newspaper edition he publishes.
